    I have all of my earthy tones next to my yellow followed my my other spectral colors. My neutrals are with my earth tones when I keep them on my main palette. And if I don’t have space it will be on a small separate palette and use what I have for a grey or anything else that will fall in the grey to black spectrum.

    • @SusanChiang
      @SusanChiang 15 часов назад

      Yes I do think this makes sense - to keep earth tones next to yellow and together. I was looking to add another earth tone and realized I would want to keep them together!

    This helps a lot! Thanks! I already have a plastic palette with all of my paints (30) and then a ceramic palette with the colours that I felt that I would use the most often, even though I don’t paint that often or nearly as much as I would like. I didn’t understand why artists put their colours in certain places, so I did ROYGBIV, with my ‘neutrals’ at the end. I’m still learning about warm and cool hues within a pigment, so if I was to do it again, to make it less confusing, I’d probably separate my warms from my cools, so that painting isn’t so intimidating for me.

    • @SusanChiang
      @SusanChiang 15 часов назад

      I've definitely seen people do palettes where warm and cool are separated from each other. I love how our brains all work differently and different arrangements seem to 'work' for each of us!

    I’ve learned a lot on RUclips and Pinterest to be honest 😂 I like Jane Blundell’s starter suggestions, which she does in 3 colors, 4 colors, 5 and 6, I believe. The four color one probably suffices for hand picked tubes (py97, po71, pr122, pb15 red shade). I would add lunar black/mars black for texture/granulation and leave ultramarine out for a later discovery. I also like a set by you on Pinterest with ultramarine, rose and lemon yellow and three other colors. That’s a very good non toxic palette to start with. Most limited starter palettes are usually safe. I can’t remember my college tubes but I remember my color wheels had very moody near-black purples. My first professional set was over ten years later after I had quit art for years and that was Daniel Smith essential 6 and I’ve been obsessed with watercolors since then.

    Stillman and Birn make a variety of sketchbooks and they are excellent in my opinion, take gouache and Gansai Tambi watercolors beautifully. Etcher is extremely expensive and unless you’re producing high end work, seems a bit much. Also I wonder why a sketchbook (as opposed to WC paper for full finished paintings) needs to be archival?

    • @SusanChiang
      @SusanChiang 2 дня назад

      Stillman and Birn have great sketchbooks with nice thick paper - I do love it for gouache and some watercolor painting (as long as it's not super wet) When I paint very wet it doesn't allow water to move around the way other paper in other sketchbooks do - so I guess I think of it more like a really nice mixed-media sketchbook. I can agree with you that Etchr is expensive - probably why I don't use it for random doodles! Hmm. And when it comes to them being archival, perhaps it's just that extra insurance that your sketchbook pages wont end up yellowing over time and deteriorating? (though I'm aware that would take a LONG time)...Not that my sketchbooks have anything that valuable in them that they would need to last forever... Now I'm just pondering too! :)

      @SusanChiang 16 дней назад

      Yes! I feel like we know/see that colors lose saturation and are more dull but we don't often stop to think about it being an actual physical characteristic/result of paint mixing. If you're interested, highly recommend looking into the curved mixing paths of paint pigments (The Color Disk explains it well) My mind was blown when I found out you can actually estimate the path two colors take when mixed together!

    This is EXTREMELY helpful! Thank you! I’m just beginning to learn. I’ve heard of colours having a warm or a cool bias. Out of curiosity, are the yellows, blues and red/magentas a combination of cools and warms or just one or the other? I really love bright paintings too and colours that stand out. I love the second colour wheel that you created with the additional secondary colours to make the brighter tertiary colours, so now you have a wider range. Thanks!

      Hi! (Late reply, but here's my answer) I tend to look at the reference photo and draw from what I see. It sounds obvious but I also know that it isn't. In a photo/reality we see a lot more details - sometimes I try to pick the most dominate or overall color - so if it was blurred out, what is the main color? Then I go for that as a starting point. If it's obviously green foliate, but has darker areas then my base is green and I will mix in the browns/dark neutrals from the shadow areas - both in the base mixture of the color, ans as well as dots/speckles/marks. Hope that makes sense!

    Hi, Can I ask you how you decide what colours to use when painting in the background in this painting? I have seen people use a similar approach when painting dense background foliage ie in a woodland scene. Many thanks

    ECHO "wish you talked us through what you were doing" ...as all my favorite tutorials do! It's so hard to figure out which color you're choosing to put in etc. by just looking. And some of your techniques are hard to hone in on without stopping and starting over and over. I do love what you do and your overall approach to painting, thank you.

      Thank you for your feedback! As I’ve continued to film and edit more and more videos over the years I’ve definitely developed a better understanding of what is more helpful from the viewers standpoint! Been thinking about refilming a new version of this slower (and with more painting experience!) stay tuned!
